Rafa Benitez is set to complete his move to Newcastle United after talks with managing director Lee Charnley today.
United expect to appoint Benitez after Steve McClaren’s time at St James’ Park finally came to an end after six days of speculation.
The fact that McClaren’s sacking was announced early on Friday shows United are keen to get the deal for Benitez done in good time for the clash with Leicester City.
The Chronicle understands that Benitez left his Wirral home at 5am this morning and was keen to get the deal done quickly. Benitez is believed to want assurances on United’s long-term plans and wants full control of the recruitment system at United and to bring in his own backroom team.
However, it is all about the here and now for Newcastle and the first task for Benitez is to seal survival with a squad that have managed to win just six times in 28 games.
McClaren was not at the training ground today with players and first team backroom staff on a day off.
Newcastle are planning to train on Saturday and Sunday before flying to the Midlands for their game with Leicester City on Monday.
Charnley said today: “We feel that a change is now needed in order to give the club the best possible chance of securing its Premier League future.
“A further announcement on a successor to Steve will be made in due course.”
